Gratallops: what to see, where to eat and wineries
Gratallops is a small village but the epicentre of the modern DOQ Priorat revival. Despite its barely two hundred residents (226 in 2025), it holds some twenty wineries, including Clos Mogador, Álvaro Palacios, Clos Erasmus, Clos de l'Obac and Mas Martinet. Its old-vine slate terraces put it on the world wine map. The neoclassical church of Sant Llorenç stands in the centre, while the hilltop hermitage of the Mare de Déu de la Consolació, of Romanesque origin (12th century) and surrounded by vineyards, offers the finest panorama.
The village grew slowly during the Middle Ages around its two main streets, Carrer Major and Carrer de Dalt; in the 14th century a castle or fortified house stood here, where Elionor Maria of Aragon once resided, though no trace of it survives, nor does the original Romanesque church. Carrer Major still holds the Casa dels Frares, with a Renaissance doorway, and the Arc de Pedra, built of reddish sandstone. Visitors can also tour the agricultural cooperative winery 'La Vinícola del Priorat', founded in 1917. The village celebrates the feast of Sant Sebastià on 20 January and its main festival, dedicated to Sant Llorenç, on 10 August.
