el Molar: what to see, where to eat and wineries

El Molar lies on the western edge of the Priorat, on the right bank of the Siurana river and partly within DO Montsant. The present-day village emerged in the late 13th or early 14th century around the Mas d'en Bas farmhouse, and remained administratively linked to Garcia until it separated in 1860; today it has around 300 inhabitants.

It stands out for its protohistoric heritage: the settlement and necropolis of Mont Calvari (7th-6th c. BC), with some of the oldest iron finds in Catalonia, part of which are kept at the Salvador Vilaseca Museum in Reus.

The village also has a strong galena (lead) mining past, alongside baryte and manganese workings; several mine entrances can still be seen. During the Spanish Civil War the town was bombed by German aircraft, and the Lluça mine served as a field hospital during the Battle of the Ebro; the old mine now houses a small mining interpretation center, though it is currently closed.
