la Morera de Montsant: what to see, where to eat and wineries

La Morera de Montsant stands at the foot of the Cingle Major, the striking escarpment of the Montsant massif, and its municipal area holds the Escaladei hamlet and the Charterhouse. It hosts the Casa del Parc, headquarters of the Serra de Montsant Natural Park, and is the starting point for climbs to the massif via the "graus" — such as the Grau dels Barrots or the Grau de Salfores, among seven marked routes — and for routes such as the Balcó del Priorat. It is also a DOQ Priorat village.

With only around 150 inhabitants and sitting at 743 metres altitude, it is one of the smallest and least populated municipalities in the Priorat, even though its territory covers nearly 53 km² and takes in much of the massif. Possibly of Arab origin, it saw medieval resettlement under various lordships; in 1810 Napoleonic troops burned the parish church, and the village castle was eventually dismantled in 1954 to reuse its stone. The parish church retains a Romanesque portal dedicated to the Nativity of Our Lady, the subject of the village's main festival (8-11 September).
