The Serra de Montsant Natural Park was declared on 15 May 2002 (Decree 131/2002) and protects 11,755.82 hectares of the range, within the Pre-Coastal ranges. Its most distinctive feature is the Cingle Major, a striking limestone escarpment that rings the massif, with the peak of Roca Corbatera (1,163 m) as its highest point. Habitats range from Mediterranean holm-oak woodland to cliff vegetation, with wildlife such as golden eagles and peregrine falcons, and a karst landscape of caves (cova Santa, cova de la Taverna) and rock shelters.
The massif spans nine municipalities and its interior can only be reached through the graus, narrow passes between the cliffs. It is dotted with medieval hermitages and the Charterhouse of Scala Dei, considered the first Carthusian monastery on the Iberian Peninsula (1194). It is one of Catalonia's most prized areas for hiking, climbing — including a via ferrata — and its spiritual heritage; in 2021 it was recognised as a Starlight destination for the quality of its night sky. The Casa del Parc visitor centre, in la Morera de Montsant, provides trail information and access conditions.
