Església de Sant Jaume Apòstol d'Ulldemolins
📍 Ulldemolins
A late-16th-century Renaissance church by Jaume Amigó and Pere Blai, regarded as one of the finest in Catalonia.
Ulldemolins lies at the north-west edge of the Priorat, on a plateau between the Serra la Llena and the Montsant massif, within or bordering the Serra de Montsant Natural Park. It has prehistoric origins, and the present-day settlement dates from the Islamic period; King Alfonso I granted it a charter of settlement in 1166. It is the gateway to the Fraguerau gorge — with rock formations known as el Camell, la Cadira and el Pont Penjat — the Cadolles Fondes pools and caves tied to a medieval eremitic tradition led by the legend of the hermit Guerau.
Its heritage centres on the Renaissance church of Sant Jaume Apòstol, built in the late 16th century (1583), and a ring of Montsant hermitages: Sant Bartomeu, Sant Antoni, Santa Bàrbara and Santa Magdalena, known as the "cathedral of Montsant", founded in 1558 and with mural paintings by Josep Juncosa from 1662. There is also the sanctuary of Mare de Déu del Loreto, built in the late 17th century in thanks for deliverance from a locust plague in 1685.
It is known for its olive oil, wine, dried garlic, cured meats, rosemary honey and sweets. The tourist office, on Plaça de l'Església, provides information on routes, points of interest and the Natural Park, and handles bookings for the Sant Antoni shelter.
