Ermita de Sant Antoni i Santa Bàrbara

📍 Ulldemolins

Website ↗

The Sant Antoni hermitage, originally dedicated to Santa Bàrbara, stands at about 700 m on the shady north slope of Montsant, some 3 km from Ulldemolins, near the old track between Albarca and Margalef, within the Serra de Montsant Natural Park. The present building dates from the 15th century; in 1559 the hermit Fra Llorenç Julià added an altar dedicated to Sant Antoni and enlarged the building, giving it the double dedication it still holds today. It has an L-shaped plan, with a nave and a rectangular chapel roofed with a ribbed vault separated from the apse by a depressed arch, and a small single-opening bell gable above the round-arched entrance.

The hermit's dwelling, attached to the church, was enlarged in 1580, renovated in the late 19th century, and converted into a holiday/colony house around 1960. The complex is listed as a local cultural heritage asset (IPAC code 11400). It is the main starting point for the Montsant hermitage routes —toward the Toll de l'Ou, the Fraguerau gorge and les Cadolles Fondes— and has a picnic area and a mountain refuge.
