Orto Vins is a cooperative project of grape growers from el Masroig, within DO Montsant, founded in 2008 when several farming families from the village decided to revive the wine-growing tradition of their land and start making wine from the grapes of their own vineyards again, continuing a practice their ancestors had kept up for generations. The name "Orto" comes from astronomy (the moment a celestial body crosses the horizon) and from a Greek prefix evoking what is "straight, correct and beautiful."
The winery farms about 30 hectares across 25 separate plots in the municipality of el Masroig, at elevations of 50 to 300 metres on sun-facing slopes with varied soils (limestone, clay, pebbles and llicorella/schist). The main varieties are Carinyena (Carignan) and Garnatxa (Grenache), along with Ull de Llebre (Tempranillo) and Picapoll Negre; the cooperative preserves distinctive old-vine parcels, including hairy Garnatxa and pre-phylloxera Picapoll. Farming is traditional, with organic and biodynamic practices, planting densities under 6,500 vines per hectare, and often bush-vine (goblet) training.
Production is organised into two lines: "Selecció d'Orto" (white, rosé, red and sweet wines such as Les Argiles d'Orto, Blanc d'Orto, Orto and La Coma d'en Genís, blended from grapes contributed by all the member families) and "Singularitats d'Orto" (single-plot wines such as La Carrerada, Les Pujoles, Les Tallades de Cal Nicolau and Palell, honouring each family's oldest, lowest-yielding heritage vineyards). Located on Passeig de l'Arbre in el Masroig, the winery offers vineyard walks and wine tastings by prior booking.
