Genium Celler was founded in 2002 in Poboleda when five (now six) families with a long winegrowing tradition in the area decided to join forces to produce quality wine from their own vineyards. The winery occupies the ground floor of a house said to have once been a settlement of the Carthusian monks of Scala Dei, and it farms around 15 hectares of vines spread across Poboleda, la Morera de Montsant and Torroja del Priorat.
The vines, some dating to the early 20th century, are mostly garnatxa and carinyena, the traditional Priorat varieties, though merlot, syrah, cabernet sauvignon, pedro ximénez and white garnatxa are also grown. A significant part of production is certified organic by CCPAE. The winery combines modern equipment - stainless steel tanks of various sizes and a grape-selection table - with ageing in 225-litre French oak barrels, aiming for wines that express Priorat terroir with complexity and elegance.
Its wines include Genium Ximenis (barrel-fermented white), Genium Celler (red crianza), Genium Ecològic (organic red), Genium Costers (red reserva), Genium Fusió and Poboleda Vi de Vila. In 2017 Wine & Spirits magazine included it among its global "Top 100 Wineries". The winery offers guided visits of about ninety minutes, including a tasting of two wines and a look at the barrel room.
