Portal del Priorat is the wine project launched in 2001 by Barcelona architect Alfredo Arribas, based at the Clos del Portal estate in Priorat, between the villages of El Lloar and Bellmunt. In late 2010 the project expanded into DO Montsant, acquiring small parcels of old vines in Marçà and el Masroig.
The Montsant vineyards sit on three distinct soil types — sandy, calcareous and clay — which are vinified and aged separately to preserve their individual character. The main varieties are Carignan and Grenache (red, white and grey), grown on old vines of 60 to 80 years under organic and biodynamic farming.
This fruit goes into wines such as Trossos Sants, made from old-vine white Grenache, and Gotes del Montsant, a Carignan-Grenache blend from vineyards up to 700 metres in altitude.
