Josep Grau Viticultor is a family project founded in 2003, when Josep Grau returned to his native village of Capçanes to begin buying vineyards from farmers leaving the trade, within DO Montsant. In 2016 the project expanded into Priorat with the purchase of a 17th-century house in Gratallops and six hectares split across four plots; the estate now farms around twenty hectares across the two appellations, at varying altitudes.
The vineyards are worked entirely by hand, from pruning to harvest, under certified organic farming with no herbicides or pesticides, some biodynamic practices, and particular attention to biodiversity. The main varieties are white grenache, red grenache, samsó (carignan) and, to a lesser extent, cabernet sauvignon and syrah.
Josep Grau's style favors authenticity over trends: low-intervention wines made without additives that aim to reflect "the natural language of the vineyard." The portfolio includes labels such as Vespres, Volador, La Florens, Pedrabona and the white Granit, with annual production of around 8,000 cases.
