Margalef: what to see, where to eat and wineries

Margalef is a small village in the Montsant river valley, within the Natural Park, world-famous for sport climbing on its conglomerate cliffs, which draw climbers from all over the world, especially in winter, filling the village's two campsites to capacity. Its municipal area holds the Margalef reservoir, with a leisure area, and the Sant Salvador hermitage, about 3.5 km from the village centre, under a huge rock overhang: the original 16th-century building was destroyed in 1936 and later rebuilt, and gatherings are held there on 6 August and 25 April. It is also an olive-oil and DO Montsant wine village, with an agricultural cooperative founded in 1952.

Near the village lies the Abric del Filador, a prehistoric rock-shelter site of exceptional importance that preserves a complete chronological sequence from the Catalan Epipalaeolithic through the early Neolithic; it was declared a local cultural heritage asset in 2024. The village also has the parish church of Sant Miquel, an 18th-century neoclassical building. The population has declined sharply over time, from 641 inhabitants in 1887 to just over a hundred today.
