Margalef is one of the world's most important sport-climbing destinations, with over 1,400 routes across some seventy sectors on orange-toned conglomerate cliffs riddled with pockets. It holds some of the hardest routes on the planet, such as Perfecto Mundo (9b+), First Minute and First Round First Minute (both 9b), Demencia Seníl (9a+) and Era Vella (8c+), in well-known sectors like Espadelles (sunny, best in winter), Laboratori (easy access, short and intense climbs), Racó de la Finestra (open year-round, with some of the most demanding lines) and La Catedral i Comaclosa (the most remote sector, with long, technical routes). The walls line the gorge the Montsant river cuts through the valley, with a mild climate that allows climbing year-round.
The village of Margalef has become an international reference point for climbing, with two campsites that regularly fill up in high season, a dedicated climbers' refuge, and, on the village square, the restaurant Els Tres Pins and the bar Cal Vernet, a common gathering spot after a day on the cliffs. Sport climbing has been developed here over roughly two decades and today, alongside agriculture (olives, almonds and fruit trees), is one of the pillars of the local economy.
