"Priorat-Montsant-Siurana, the agricultural landscape of the Mediterranean mountains" is a cultural landscape presented as a mosaic of vineyards, olive and almond groves, dry-stone walls, slate soils, massive rock formations and villages shaped by centuries of polyculture. It was added to Spain's UNESCO Tentative List on 7 February 2014.
The bid, driven since 2007 by the Prioritat association together with the Priorat comarcal council and the Diputació de Tarragona, reached its high point in 2017: the Escaladei Manifesto, setting out a landscape-management framework among the municipalities involved, was signed in March, and in October Spain's Consejo del Patrimonio Histórico approved the formal nomination, which was submitted to UNESCO in February 2018. Following an ICOMOS on-site evaluation visit in autumn 2018, its 2019 report did not recommend inscription and the Spanish state withdrew the bid. Since 2022 the promoters have resumed talks with the Catalan government and ICOMOS to strengthen the dossier, so today it remains an ongoing candidacy — still on the tentative list — rather than an inscribed property.
The proposed territory covers roughly 500 km² and is presented around five qualities — clarity, harmony, sustainability, diversity and culture — illustrating centuries of mountain agricultural adaptation. The Prioritat association also runs outreach projects such as Miradors del Priorat, viewpoints that help visitors read the landscape, and the candidacy has additionally been put forward for a European landscape award.
