Celler de Capçanes is a cooperative winery founded in 1933, when a group of winegrowing families from the village of Capçanes decided to join forces. It began by selling bulk wine and grapes to third parties, but over time evolved toward producing higher-end wines with international recognition, while retaining its cooperative structure.
The vineyards spread across slopes and terraces sheltered by the Serra de Llaberia mountains, with four distinct soil types: clay, slate (llicorella), limestone and sand, each lending different nuances to the wines. The main varieties are garnacha (grenache) and cariñena, grown as low-yielding bush vines, some up to 110 years old.
The winery is also known as a pioneer in kosher winemaking, producing wines under rabbinical supervision from the OU (Orthodox Union, USA), the Kashrut Federation of London and Chabad Lubavitch of Barcelona. Visits can be booked in advance, with tastings ranging from 25 to 80 euros per person, available on weekdays and Saturday mornings.
