la Torre de Fontaubella: what to see, where to eat and wineries

La Torre de Fontaubella is one of the smallest villages in the Priorat, in the southeastern corner of the comarca at the foot of the Mola de Colldejou and already within the Serra de Llaberia, inside DO Montsant. With around 120 inhabitants, its economy is led by hazelnuts, complemented by vines, olives and almonds. It keeps the neoclassical 18th-century parish church of Santa Maria and the remains of the Torre del Rafolí, a square-plan tower about 8 metres a side and 10 metres high, attributed to the Saracen (Muslim) occupation period.

The GR-7-3 long-distance trail crosses the municipality, entering from l'Argentera and continuing toward the Serra de Llaberia, and from the village the Mola can be climbed for views reaching the coast. It holds its summer festival on the first Saturday and Sunday of August (moved from 8 September around the 1950s to avoid clashing with the hazelnut harvest) and a New Year's Eve winter festival. The village has a bar-restaurant, a shop, rural accommodation and a campsite.
