la Figuera: what to see, where to eat and wineries

La Figuera is a hilltop village known as the "sentinel of the Priorat", with just over a hundred residents and steep streets crowned by the church of Sant Martí, an 18th-century building erected over an older defensive structure, with three naves, a choir and an attached bell tower.

To the north-east of the village stands the Sant Pau hermitage, whose terrace is called the "viewpoint of the seven provinces"; nearby, a concrete command bunker -a covered trench- served as the headquarters of the Republican Army of the Ebro during the Battle of the Ebro, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Juan Modesto. Els Colls de Solans, known as the "Balcony of the Priorat", offer sweeping views over the region.

The village's economy revolves around wine, covered by the Montsant designation of origin, and olive oil, under the Siurana DO; the local cooperative, founded in 1932 as an Agricultural Union, handles production and marketing.
